"The Year of 40" Race 10 Complete: Optim Orthopedic Skidaway Island Half Marathon

Race number 10 is done and in the books! Through the first quarter of the year I'm on track with having completed one quarter of my race goal. This past Saturday was one of my big tests for the year as it was not only one of two schedule half marathons but it was also a challenge this early in the schedule.  Due to some leg issues I hadn't been able to push my distance over the last month like I'd hoped so I wasn't sure how things would go for this run. As it turns out it was my best half marathon yet (I've run two previously) and I set a PR for time at 08:49/mile and finishing in a total time of 01:55:40.

This was truly a great run as it wound through and upscale living
community, The Landings, on Skidaway Island.  Along the route we were on roads, cart paths, and trails that ran alongside the marsh. Despite some rainy weather that got everyone soaked early on, the temperatures stayed just right.

Miles one through eight were pretty smooth before fatigue started to set in.  Over the next couple of miles I had a couple of 30-60 second walk intervals before moving into walk and sprint intervals over the final few miles. I managed to have enough left in the tank to sprint the final 75-100 yards to the finish line.  The Year of 40 continues!

"The Year of 40" Races 8 & 9 Complete: Kilt & Kolor 5K + Beaufort Twilight Run 5K

This past weekend I was able to knock out two more races on my schedule and bring the count up to 9 completed runs. Saturday morning I hit a local color run with one of my kids and then headed over to Beaufort, SC later that day for an evening 5K. So far I've been able to share two of my races with one of my daughters which is awesome. I love having her participate in this with me. The later race I was running for time and came in at a really good pace for me. Overall, it was a great day for running as the weather held out and the temperatures were not too high. Race number 10 looms this coming weekend with my first big test as I tackle one of my two half-marathons scheduled for this year!

"The Year of 40" Race Number 7 Complete: Chick-fil-A 5K for Young Life

Hit race number 7 on Saturday morning after completing race number 6 the evening before. The weather here in Southeast Georgia is warming up and the sandgnats know it!  They were out in force pre and post-race.  Just a little extra incentive to run fast I guess.  Made great time according to the official timing. The legs have been holding up well thanks to some compression sleeves for my calf muscles that had been giving me issue. I'm looking forward to races 8 and 9 coming up next Saturday and then my first big test the following weekend at the Skidaway Island half-marathon.

Race number 6 as things kick into high gear with my running schedule!  This was a fun 5k through parts of downtown Savannah.  We began in Ellis Square, made our way to and around Forsyth Park (where earlier that day they had greened the famous fountain green for St. Patrick's Day), and then back to Ellis Square. Finished 4th out of 47 in my age group, so I'm pretty happy with that!
